Laser Vision Consultations
Many people who require glasses or contact lenses are at least curious about laser vision correction and whether it is appropriate for them. Here is a brief description of the procedure; a thin flap is surgically created in the outermost 15-20% of the cornea and gently folded back. An Excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea into a flatter profile (much like a contact lens corrects vision) after which the flap is returned to its original position, acting as a natural bandage. The healing process is rapid and the discomfort level quite minimal. People often report they did not feel anything and could see well the very first day. Most have improved vision in 24-48 hours, but healing rates vary amongst individuals. Vision, although greatly improved immediately after surgery, often continues to improve for weeks or even months.
LASIK is not for everyone. Eyes are different so, even though you may have had a friend who has experienced LASIK, it may not be the best course of treatment for you. If you are interested in laser vision correction, we will be happy to guide you in selecting the best surgeon and procedure for you, including exploring non-surgical forms of vision correction. Following the procedure, it is imperative Dr. Kazdan & Associates monitor your eyes and adjust your medication for the best possible results. Going forward, periodic complete eye exams will insure you continue to enjoy your outcome for a lifetime. Understand the anatomical structure of your eye still differs from normal even though the refractive status has been corrected and the risk for retinal problems remains greater in previously nearsighted individuals.
